Respiratory are most frequent in autumn and winter, especially in house calves and in the following situations:
-Young calves, particularly when first put into groups
-Autumn housed calves, especially spring born suckled calves
-Bought in calves or older cattle
-Stressed calves (it is widely recognised that stress can reduce immunity which increases the susceptibility to disease.

Factors which can increase stress are transportation, housing or regrouping, competition for insufficient feed, overcrowding, dehorning and castration)
Very palatable encourages feeding and stimulates intake and digestion of forage to improve animal performance (approx 10% in University trials).
